BigCommerce store development

We build BigCommerce stores: a Cornerstone-based theme for your brand, catalogue import templates, migrations from other platforms with a verification log, and guides for your admins. BigCommerce is worth a look when you want a hosted platform with lots of built-in features, a large catalogue or B2B sales.

When to choose BigCommerce

  • A large catalogue with many variants and product attributes
  • You sell to both retail and wholesale customers
  • You want a hosted platform with more built-in features
  • You sell in the US or EU with mainstream payment and shipping providers
  • You plan several storefronts or languages on one admin

When another platform fits better

  • A small store where a fast start and a huge app choice matter most — Shopify fits better
  • You need full freedom of logic and your own hosting — WooCommerce fits better
  • You have no budget for a subscription that rises with your sales
  • You need a design-led content site more than a store

What BigCommerce is

BigCommerce is a hosted e-commerce platform, like Shopify: hosting, security and updates are on the platform, and you pay a subscription. The difference is philosophy. Shopify leans on a huge app ecosystem; BigCommerce leans on built-in features: advanced filtering and product options, wholesale pricing, multiple storefronts, and APIs for headless stores. Themes run on the Stencil framework, and the default Cornerstone theme is the usual starting point for a custom design.

Strengths

  • Lots built in. Some tasks that need paid apps elsewhere are handled by standard BigCommerce settings.
  • No platform transaction fees — you only pay your payment provider.
  • B2B and large catalogues: customer groups, custom price lists, complex product options.
  • An open API for integrations with accounting, inventory and marketplaces.

Limitations

  • Plans are tied to sales volume: once annual online sales pass your plan’s threshold, the store moves to a higher plan.
  • A smaller ecosystem of apps and fewer developers on the market than Shopify or WooCommerce.
  • Some local providers outside the main markets need custom integration.
  • Stencil themes need a developer who knows the platform — this is not a visual builder.

How we work with BigCommerce

For a bookstore selling lifestyle medicine titles we built a theme on top of Cornerstone: a custom design that still stays compatible with updates to the base theme. Along with the theme, the client got a product import template, so the catalogue is filled from a spreadsheet rather than by hand, and an admin guide on adding books and managing categories and promotions without a developer.

Another project was a veterinary store catalogue migration. We ran a full export — products, brands, pages, images and settings — and recorded every stage in a verification log. That way the owner can see that everything moved, not that it “seems to have moved”.

On BigCommerce we also set up analytics and tracking and technical SEO: category and product URLs, meta tags, image performance.

BigCommerce or another platform?

BigCommerce Shopify WooCommerce
Hosting The platform The platform Yours
Built-in features Many Core + apps Core + plugins
Platform fee on sales None Depends on payment gateway None
B2B A strength On higher plans Via plugins or custom work
Developers available Fewer Many Most

If a large app choice matters more than built-in features, Shopify is usually the better fit; if you want your own hosting and total flexibility, WooCommerce.

When BigCommerce beats Shopify

Compare the full yearly cost of ownership, not the subscription price. BigCommerce usually wins when your needs would require several paid Shopify apps — filters, wholesale pricing, complex options — when you use a third-party payment gateway and don’t want an extra platform fee, or when B2B is a core channel rather than an experiment.

Migrating to and from BigCommerce

A store migration is the riskiest part of working with any platform: images, product options, SEO fields or old URLs are easy to lose. So we work from a checklist:

  1. Inventory: products, options, brands, categories, pages, images, settings.
  2. Export and transformation into the new platform’s format, plus an import template for future updates.
  3. A 301 redirect map from old URLs to new ones.
  4. Import and a verification log: what moved, what was checked, what needs manual attention.
  5. Post-launch checks: orders, payments, Google indexing.

We move stores away from BigCommerce the same way — to Shopify when you need a bigger app ecosystem, or to WooCommerce when your own hosting and full flexibility matter.

What to check before and after the move so you keep your Google traffic is in our site migration checklist for keeping your rankings.

FAQ

FAQ

How much does a BigCommerce store cost?

Store development starts at €2,000, with a timeline from 45 days. The BigCommerce subscription is paid to the platform separately and depends on your plan and sales volume.

How is BigCommerce different from Shopify?

Both are hosted. BigCommerce offers more built-in features and charges no transaction fees; Shopify has a larger app ecosystem and more developers.

Is BigCommerce good for B2B?

Yes, it is one of its strengths: customer groups, custom price lists and complex product options are available without heavy custom work.

Can we update the catalogue from a spreadsheet?

Yes. We prepare an import template for your catalogue so new products are added from a file rather than one by one.

How do you avoid losing data in a migration?

We take a full inventory and keep a verification log at every stage: products, brands, pages, images, settings. Old URLs are redirected with 301s.

Can BigCommerce run a headless store?

Yes. BigCommerce has APIs for catalogue, cart and orders, so the storefront can be built separately — on Next.js, for example — while the admin and payments stay on the platform. It pays off for complex designs or products, not for a typical store.
